Acupuncture and Herbal medicine with Jennifer Black, LAc

Thank you for visiting the online home of Jennifer Black, licensed acupuncturist
(LAc, Dipl OM, MTOM).

Acupuncture is a medical system originating in East Asia that has been developed over the course of thousands of years. It's theory is based on the belief that all pathology is the result of imbalance in the body. Acupuncture works to help bring the patient's body back into balance so that it may heal itself, understanding that our bodies in their perfect state are capable of maintaining a healthy, homeostatic environment.

Whether this is your first time receiving acupuncture, or you are a long-time convert and are just looking for a new practitioner, it is important that you feel comfortable with and confident in your healthcare decisions.

Here is what to expect from a treatment with Jennifer:

Initial Visit with Acupuncture:
On your first visit with Jennifer, she will take a comprehensive health history and perform a Chinese medical diagnostic exam. Once she has come up with a Chinese medical diagnosis, your treatment may or may not include any of the following: acupuncture, gua sha, cupping, moxa, tui na, heat therapy, herbal prescriptions and lifestyle/nutritional counseling.

Duration: 90 minutes
Price: $125 (not including herbs/supplements)

Initial Herbal Consultation:
For conditions that are best suited for primarily herbal treatment (Dermatology, Allergic Disease, Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis), or for people to whom acupuncture is not appealing, patients can opt for a one-hour Herbal Consultation with Jennifer. This would involve an hour-long conversation outlining the patients comprehensive health history, and any information relevant to the pathology from the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Once a Chinese medical diagnosis is determined, a treatment plan is put together and the patient is given options on nutritional protocols, herbal formulas and/or vitamin/mineral supplements for their consideration. This treatment option does not include acupuncture, gua sha, moxa or cupping.

Duration: 60 minutes
Price: $125 (not including herbs/supplements)

Follow-up with Acupuncture:
The intake for follow-up visits will be less comprehensive, so will move more quickly, and the treatment will consist of the same techniques described above.

Duration: 60 minutes
Price: $75 (not including herbs/supplements)

Follow-up Herbal Consultation:
We will review current symptoms and the patient's overall well-being, and will modify the herbal formula as needed. The duration of time between each herbal consult follow-up will be determined on an individual basis, based on where we are at in the overall treatment plan.

Duration: 30 minutes
Price: $50 (not including herbs/supplements)

Fire Cupping Therapy or Gua Sha:
From the perspective of Traditional East Asian Medicine, all pain is the result of stagnation or imbalance. Cupping therapy uses heated glass cups to create suction on your skin, encouraging circulation of blood and lymph. Cupping is the suggested therapy for mid-low back or shoulder pain. Gua sha also encourages circulation, but with the use of a blunt-edged tool made of horn, stone or wood, and is best for upper back/neck pain. Both cupping therapy and gua sha leave marks on the skin called "sha" (or "sand" in Chinese) that take approximately one week to resolve, sometimes less. They are both very old techniques essential to many traditions of folk medicine, typically administered within the family. While the sensations they create are unusual, they are painless and very effective at helping resolve both acute and chronic pain. They can also be effective in helping the body rid itself of impending (or established) cough, cold or flu symptoms.

Duration: 30 minutes
Price: $40 (for established patients only)
