Acupuncture is one of four Complimentary Alternative Medicine (CAM) modalities covered under the Affordable Care Act in the state of California.
Each insurance plan decides what medical conditions they cover for acupuncture benefits. Orthopedic pain (back, knee, hip, shoulder) is the most commonly covered condition, but will need to be verified by your insurance company on an individual basis. Insurance in California will not cover acupuncture for treatment of hormone balancing/fertility, insomnia, stress, anxiety, digestive issues or dermatology unless there is a legitimate pain condition involved in the presentation that we are treating. Additionally, herbal medicine, suggested supplements and lab work can not be run through insurance and are an out-of-pocket cost to the patient.
Jennifer Black, LAc is currently in-network for treatment with the following insurance plans at her Highland Holistic location:
Blue Shield (PPO)
United Healthcare (PPO)
For most other PPO insurance plans that have acupuncture benefits, Jennifer can either bill as an out-of-network provider, or provide the patient with a super-bill for reimbursement. But the medical condition must still be verified by the insurance company as a covered condition, and some out-of-network plans do not offer acupuncture benefits until the annual deductible has been met. HMO plans typically do not have out-of-network acupuncture benefits.
